‘Cantos I’ by Unorthodox Digital is the first entry in a 3-part album series based around Dante Alighieri’s 14th-century masterpiece, with each album corresponding to, and emulating narrative elements from its respective book within the Comedy. Following Dante’s descent through the Inferno, Cantos I is itself a descent, starting out meditative, simplistic, and relaxed, but gradually building into an oppressive, blistering wall of noise, as each track introduces additional layers of instrumentation, distortion, and dissonance. This album was made to be a continuous experience, with each track giving context to its adjacent cuts, strewn together with field recordings to ground the record. Though knowledge of the book may compliment the experience, Cantos I is not shackled by its inspiration, and can be largely enjoyed with little to no prior experience with Dante’s writings.
