Funeral Cake layers sing-song melodies, fuzzy bar chords and an occasional synthesizer over a good beat that you can dance to. A sprinkling of flute, piccolo, and glockenspiel indulges singer-songwriter and guitarist April Brott’s classical flute and piano background and occasionally tips the genre scale from power pop to twee. The bittersweet, nostalgic lyrics and unornamented chord progressions are reminiscent of 60s girl groups without the cloying, fake-50s-diner sound of a throwback group. Their latest EP ‘One Place Left’ is out now on Dandy Boy Records.
