Tyrone Smith’s EQ Why project returns to Orange Milk with a rapid and tight collection of dance floor tracks for the end of 2023. You can hear the classic Footwork sound that Smith became known for twisting with other forms and electronic music traditions. There are Kraftwerk-style squelches in the opening and closing tracks, and the chopped vocal edits and sample work on the title track remind me of early 90s bass music riding a frantic juke momentum. The whole album flows like a continuous mix, minimal and precise in its instrumentation with no filler. I love the stripped back but intense energy of “Sixteen 33” — the focus is entirely on the rhythmic interplay with occasional bass note punctuations and nothing more; it perfectly captures the ethos of this music with only a few ingredients, and when you turn it up loud it feels so good.
