Kudos’ “a different reason” is a collection of 22 SP 202-based tracks from the baltimore-based beatmaker. It is really two projects revisited: kudos’ debut tape, contingencies, a series of improvisations recorded in summer 2022; and his sophomore album, detours, a digital release that came out on 2/02 this year. kudos “demastered” the initial versions of both projects in an effort to further embrace the raw textural magic of the 202. The result is a mesmerizing transformation of restraint into plenty. Cozy yet otherworldly, lyrical though wordless, fleeting but suggestive of an inner odyssey, “a different reason” will immediately envelop you in its defamiliarizing warmth but dispense its secrets slowly, as if in no rush to be heard and understood fully.
