Madeline Gorniak & Audie Ellis – Amygdala

Two young, talented musicians turn primal fear into sound on this new retrac release, “inspired by pharmakon, throbbing gristle, john lennon and yoko onos unfinished music.” it’s a nice balance between the label’s noisy/chaotic stuff and surreal, hypnagogic releases. featured in the approximate hour is a wide variety of noises and loops “made live with pedals, feedback loops… a piezo box, a guitar, many random metal objects, and three amps”

“amygdala” could be an album you show to someone who’s on the fence about getting into noise music. the way it was recorded especially strikes me as grounding and inviting, and makes the hour fly by. when played on a good set of headphones/monitors, you feel like you’re sitting in the room besides the two artists. there’s a sense of real, tangible space when you listen, adding to the intensity and fear in a subtle way: there’s a strange comfort to it as the harshness is slightly dampened because of this recording technique, but not in a way where it lessens the impact. if anything, because the noise feels like it’s in the room with you, the quick shifts in dynamic range feel all the more jarring.
