Adam Void. An individual for whom it is truly challenging to succinctly summarize. Multimedia artist, enigmatic hobo, serial train hopper, graffiti og, DIY publicist, noise maker; a hero of anti-(and traditional?) folk art. A generational voice of contemporary Americana. An artist’s artist. Regardless of the lens you peer at A.Void through, it’s hard to avoid viewing a reflection of modern, and in decline, American society juxtaposed against the backgrounds of historically rich transgressive practices that ironically built the backbone of US fiction and nonfiction.
‘POVERTY IN THE USA’ is painfully apt. Amidst tragic LA and greater California wildfires ongoing while I type this, the ever-cliche-continually-sinking-story of Florida, the devastation annually caused by hurricanes and inclement weather that terrorize the East coast and even inland areas, and whatever other great tragedies and travesties I’m forgetting due to their oversaturation in the news cycles and our day-to-day lives, we highlight a painful narrative of American infrastructure failures and its consequences burdened by mostly those spanning the destitute to middle class.
POVERTY IN THE USA is a crude, even downright ugly, juxtaposition of the American dream and fiction versus its painful reality and nonfiction. Spanning Hollywood hellscapes to the rolling views from the side of a train car. A.Void presents us with two widely different perspectives on Side A, the hideous anthem and title track of “POVERTY IN THE USA” followed by the wistful, atmospheric, analog ambience of the stream-of-consciousness spoken word piece, “Unconsciously Drifting”. Side B is a downright noise track, though some experimental and utterly odd vocals are interlaid at points. It’s a weirdo’s world and outsider music reigns supreme, we’re all just trying to maintain some sense of normalcy. So hop on or get off, it doesn’t matter. We’re all headed to the last stop anyways. You might as well enjoy the soundtrack to the crumbling, cracked house we built as you stroll along the tracks. Out now on Cult Love Sound Tapes.
