‘The Cut (Vol.2) The Mixtape’ is a special piece of Sydney hip-hop history. A mixtape comprised of live recordings from a warehouse party called ‘The Cut’, presented by The New Style, curated by Wicked Bandit, and powered by Honey Trap Sound System.
‘The Cut’ began as a radio show on Sydney’s Eastside FM ten years ago. Conceptually, ‘The Cut’ was a space you could tap out of the hustle and bustle of real life whilst tapping into the finest underground hip-hop. Eight years later, this figurative space became real.
On Saturday, 24 May 2024, Volume 2 of ‘The Cut’ was held and recorded in full. Hosting some of SYD City’s finest MCs, Producers, Beat Makers, and DJs holding it down in the hip-hop community.
This tape is a sonic collage, made up of moments from this event, lovingly cut up, arranged, and stitched together by Wicked Bandit so you could experience part of the magic that this space was. It is Wicked Bandit’s love letter to Sydney and to the music that is bubbling away in its underground.
This tape contains performances and experiences captured in situ, showcasing the artists and their interaction with space and place in their most raw and real form, something rarely shared beyond the walls of intimate, live music experiences.
There is a lack of evidence beyond our phone screens of the magic in these spaces. Magic that is transformative and highly meaningful to many people involved. More people need to have access to it. Not only to benefit those who were a part of it, but also to inspire the next generation of art and music lovers to keep our DIY communities alive.
