John Swanke is a guitarist from Camano Island, one of the largest islands in the puget sound, who crafts fingerstyle guitar compositions and improvisations. On his latest release, ‘Horizon Lines’, Swanke leans heavily into ambience and swelling huge textures that build up behind their plucked strings so much so that there’s a few times on this tape that they ditch the guitar entirely in favor of letting the swirling void take over. The guitar playing when it is present is soothing, patient, well paced and really tells a story with the arcs of picks and strums. Out now on Bud Tapes.
