“Spilling Open” captures the liminal, hypnotic, and synesthetic memories from cellist Joey Reyes’ childhood as he dozed off at his mother’s orchestra rehearsals, colors and music swirling in his head.
“Mom pushed me to pick up the cello when I was five, and urged me to stick with it. I recorded ‘Spilling Open’ in the concert hall where she learned to play violin as a little girl. At it’s core, this album is the closing of a circuit – an artistic cycle between a mother and son.”
The album’s first half is solo cello and electronics, weaving a tapestry from the private vulnerability and weight that instruments carry across generations. To help carry that weight, Reyes enlists friends and collaborators for the album’s second half – Central Texas treasures Thor Harris (Thor & Friends, Swans), Lindsey Verrill & Jeff Johnston (Little Mazarn), Bill Baird, and Rodolfo Smith-Villarreal III & Neil Lord (Future Museums). Out now on Aural Canyon.
