subespai – Saints

After living for many years in Australia, Subespai’s Mauri Edo returned home to Spain in 2022. Much changed for him in the interim – time ticks on, as it always does, and reverse culture shock can be both a blessing and a curse. Back in Spain, he returned to music-making after a long hiatus, and in tandem with his new perspective on an old place, he began exploring field recordings of local festivities in his new home in Alaior, Menorca.

Each longform track on Saints is built around a recording of a traditional tune associated with the festivals of St. Lawrence and St. Anthony. These recordings serve as a pretext to weave layered soundscapes – where drones and field recordings intermingle – to evoke emotional resonance and drift through memory and place. The tracks capture a snapshot of Edo’s personal state of mind during their creation: themes of loneliness and isolation, seasonality, and a renewed connection with the art world all echo through this work, alongside his ongoing reflections on existence, society, and the self. Out now on Oxtail Recordings.
