Sound Mapping, a field-recording workshop jointly hosted by Kankyō Records and Kōen Nakameguro, was held on June 28, 2025. Sound Mapping Vol.1 June 28, 2025 at Nakameguro is a cassette release that documents the sounds recorded during this workshop.
The concept centers on mapping the city through sound. Starting from KŌEN, participants walked through the streets of Nakameguro, carefully recording a wide range of everyday urban sounds—footsteps, passing conversations, the murmur of the river, and the subtle resonances hidden in back alleys. Recordings were made using recorders provided by ZOOM, capturing the natural sense of distance and texture of sounds scattered throughout the city as they were.
Under the guidance of sound artist Yama Yuki, the workshop explored approaches to field recording and microphone placement, encouraging each participant to engage with the city through their own sensory perspective. The recorded materials were composed without excessive editing; through the layering of multiple viewpoints, the quiet outline of a single city gradually emerges.
The recordings were mastered by Chihei Hatakeyama. Captured through the simple acts of walking, listening, and recording, this cassette stands as a quiet document of the relationship between the city and sound.
