God’s Burnout is a trio comprising Saskia von Klitzing, Matthias Kaiser and Jun-Y Ciao. They premiered at this year’s Moers Festival in Germany and subsequently performed at the REM Festival in Bremen. This recording was made in June of this year.
Saskia von Klitzing is the drummer for the renowned German rock band “Fehlfarben” and also for Caspar Brötzmann Massaker. Within “God’s Burnout”, she employs a barrel drum alongside an array of percussion instruments, including various cymbals, chains, and other objects. Matthias Kaiser, based in Cologne, is an accomplished violinist who has long been active within Germany’s improvisational music scene, where he also serves as a dedicated organizer. He first met Jun-Y Ciao in 2011, and they have maintained a long-term collaborative relationship ever since. “Where is the Zeitgeist? Editing Office” also released the duo album <The Rough Fabric of Inner Core> by Matthias Kaiser and Jun-Y Ciao this year. Several years prior, the German label Tonkunstmanufaktur published a trio album by Matthias Kaiser, Yan Jun, and Jun-Y Ciao, recorded in 2017, entitled <…Once We Run Out of Time. Storm Remains>. Having resided predominantly in Germany since last year, Jun-Y Ciao has increasingly focused his playing on high-register wind instruments such as the soprano saxophone, soprillo saxophone, and soprano suona in this recording. He has also incorporated greater use of found objects.
The entire recording unfolds in one continuous breath, developing within a poetic narrative. The album title < Der Tanz der Dämmerung>(it means :Dance of Twilight) seems to hint at something deeper. As dusk falls, the god of the sun slowly departs while the god of wine gradually takes center stage. Notes unfold within the gentle mist of twilight light, sounds shifting and unfolding within time that seems suspended. The entire album exudes a cool romanticism, reminiscent of Caspar David Friedrich’s profoundly atmospheric paintings. Out now on Where Is The Zeitgeist?
