“Preparing For War” is the third demo tape from Ancestors Blood. At this stage, the band puts atmosphere and pacing ahead of aggression or speed. Recorded in 2004 and released a year later by Stellar Winter Records, the tape sticks to mid-tempo songs, skips blastbeats, and focuses on flow, mood, and restraint.
The songwriting is straightforward and intentional. Two keyboard instrumentals open and close the three metal tracks, giving the release a clear structure instead of just a random set of songs. The metal tracks use steady riffs and repetition, letting the themes develop over time. A sense of melancholy runs through the tape, supported by the focus on atmosphere instead of constant intensity.
Keyboards are central here, acting as the base of the music rather than just adding extra sounds. They set the mood and help move the listener through each part. The guitars sound raw but are clearer than before, avoiding too much muddiness while keeping a rough feel. The vocals are harsh and straightforward, sitting above the music without overpowering it. The whole sound feels natural and fits together well.
In Ancestors Blood’s early work, “Preparing For War” stands out as a move toward a more polished sound while keeping its underground feel. The band starts to use space, melody, and repetition with more confidence, making a release that draws listeners in instead of always pushing for their attention. Out now on Pulse Records.
