Hamilton, Ontario based musician, academic, and sonic experimenter Doug Tewksbury has been sharing his ambient-adjacent sound art for the better part of the last five years. He has worked to create various sound installations, and explored intersections between music and art through collaborations and investigations into different creative practices.
Tewksbury has covered new territory with each of his previous three albums, 2021’s Paths, 2022’s Brutes, 2024’s Floes Vol. 1-4, and this continues on his fourth album Imaginary North debut, rust/wave. As with his previous work, he has prioritized analogue sounds including tape loops, reel to reels, and hardware synthesizers for sound creation and manipulation.
On this album, Tewksbury has created a collection of relatively short pieces (especially compared to his previous two albums), all composed starting with vintage hardware samplers like the Akai Riff-o-matic, a lo-fi guitar trainer, and Korg MS-1. On each track, Tewksbury seeks opportunities to explore textures, imperfections, distortions, warble, and more. Though his approach to the music is mostly experimental, this is a tremendously warm and inviting album that feels cohesive and complete. Out now on Imaginary North.
