Cuir – Monoface

The pink balaclava is back. And this time, it isn’t looking back. ‘Monoface‘—the title says it all, with that economy of words that is a CUIR trademark. One face. One side. A mask with no reverse. Since their first cassettes dropped in 2019, CUIR has never needed to justify itself or glance in the rearview mirror: the project moves in a straight line—synths leading the charge, mouth shut, a riff straight to the jaw. This new record is no exception. It delivers that same jittery synth-punk that nods as much to street-level Oi! as it does to 80s cold wave and cyberpunk—a sound that is definitively their signature, as instantly recognizable as the fuchsia balaclava pulled tight over their head. The production—polished yet unsterilized—retains that slightly greasy texture that clings to your fingers like cheap latex; exactly what you want. The lyrics, as always with CUIR, strike a balance between the trivial and the deeply personal: sloth elevated to a philosophy, self-destruction embraced with a smile, and the sordid details of daily life recounted with disarming sincerity and a touch of irony. CUIR makes no attempt to be anyone else—and therein lies their strength.
In a punk world that has started taking itself too seriously, CUIR remains funny, filthy, and brutally honest. Best played loud—ideally in a van that smells of beer and rubber. Out now on Idiotape Records.
