Bumpy Records No. 44 is “Cláudia Raia da Loucura”, the brand new album from LULE, moniker of avant-rocker Luiz Bruno of Porto Alegre, Brazil. “Cláudia Raia da Loucura” is a collection of sunny psych-rock tunes that display Bruno’s range as a songwriter and provide a warm contrast to his more nihilistic (or realistic?) experimental/electronic project I Know I’m An Alien. The songs here are more reminiscent of mid-90s Flaming Lips than mid-70s Devo, and manage to combine the playful exploration in sonic landscape of both groups. The song “Bico de Pato” begins with a mellow and spacey groove that quickly descends into a melted swirl of children’s playground chants and Ween-like guitar solos. Next in line is the track “Você Está Ficando Louco”, which sounds on the onset as if Frank Zappa had stumbled into a Portishead album, and transmorgifies from there into a cartoonish indie rock anthem. Heavily processed samples and sound effects layer this richly fun and poppy album, and fans of The Flaming Lips, Ween, and Os Mutantes will no doubt find themselves singing along in Portuguese through its kaleidoscopic journey.
